Biography

Marty Wojciechowski is an evolutionary biologist who studies plant evolution, specifically plant evolutionary relationships, biogeographic and ecological distributions, genome structure, and rates of molecular evolution and species diversification.

He uses molecular data and phylogenetic approaches to study processes that cause diversity. He also studies evolutionary patterns seen in morphological, developmental and genetic elements in plants. He and his lab group use primarily chloroplast and nuclear gene sequences along with bioinformatic tools to estimate the nature and rates of evolutionary change over millions of years.

His current research focuses mainly on the systematics and evolution of the diverse legume family of flowering plants (Leguminosae), which includes species such as peas, beans, alfalfa, clovers, locoweeds, acacias, mesquites, and paloverdes — all agriculturally or ecologically important.  Recently, his work has expanded into the genomics of cacti with an emphasis on the columnar species of North America such as the saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea).  He collaborates with an international team of researchers.  He is also the legume family editor for The Jepson Manual, Vascular Plants of California (Univ. California Press, 2012), and a member of the soon to be published Legumes of Arizona, An Illustrated Flora and Reference.
