Biography

Michelle Sullivan Govani is thrilled to have the opportunity to advance ASU’s charter as a University Innovation Fellow because she believes in the power of higher education to foster positive social change. Always driven by public service, Michelle discovered her passion for higher education innovation as Vice President and then President of ASU’s Graduate and Professional Student Association. She worked with university leaders and her peers to revise student parental-leave policy, promote awareness and prevention of sexual assault, and create a mentoring compact to enable crucial conversations about mental health. Further, she experimented with student government design by supporting college- and school-councils to better raise and address student ideas and concerns. In 2018, Michelle also led ASU’s successful student-campaign against federal taxes on graduate student tuition waivers. These efforts stem from her desire to empower students to contribute to our shared communities within and beyond ASU.

Michelle holds a Master’s degree in Biology (with a concentration in Biology and Society) from Arizona State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Iowa, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. In her doctoral research, which she will wrap up this fall, Michelle connects with people and groups in the government, non-profit, and academic sectors to tell the story of US National Parks in the 21st century: How will this long-standing, traditional institution innovate to address environmental and social change? Michelle is excited to apply her expertise at the intersection of science, politics, and policy, to the study and innovation of higher education institutions. Though born and raised in Iowa, Michelle loves the Sonoran Desert and considers it her adopted home.
