Biography

Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown is a professor in civil and environmental engineering in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment and is a member of the Biodesign Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University. Krajmalnik-Brown's lab uses microbiological skills, genomic techniques and environmental engineering to study biodegradation of water contaminants, biotechnology for renewable bioenergy production and the gut microbiome.

She received her bachelor’s degree in industrial biochemical engineering from the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana (UAM) in Mexico City. She worked for a year at IBTech, an environmental engineering consulting firm. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship which she used to get her master’s degree at Georgia Tech, and then went on to complete her doctorate in environmental engineering at Georgia Tech. She is author of mutiple patents, several peer-reviewed publications and has presented numerous talks and posters at national and international conferences.

Research Interests

Her primary areas of research interest are: bioremediation, the use of microbial systems for bioenergy production with an emphasis on environmental applications of molecular microbial ecology.  Another area of research where she applies her molecular microbial ecology expertise is the human intestinal microbial ecology and its relationship to obesity and autism.  In 2011 she was awarded an NSF career award. She has published more than 85 peer reviewed articles.  Her research has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Nature Microbial Reviews, Cell, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Science and Technology, FEMS Microbiology Ecology and Environmental Microbiology.
